This introduction was written in 2008 by Vlasta Pechova, author of the book. This book aims to introduce Taiji martial art in its classical form to the public. The book presents the Yang style method that was founded by Yang Lu-chan. His grandson, Yang Cheng-fu introduced this style all over China.

The style has been adapted several times by various masters, which resulted in different versions of various qualities. Apart from others, this publication tries to point out at the unique Yang style, however the extent of the book cannot by far cover the whole subject.

The book discloses and describes Taiji in words and ideas that correspond to our cultural background. Apart from technical aspects of Taiji, the book also clarifies some myths and problems of Taiji teaching and training. Theoretical part of the book and presentation of configurations are followed by experiments and exercises that create a sufficient base for understanding and feelings of Taiji motion system. The exercises have been carefully selected to be beneficial to a great group of readers. They are accompanied with explanations that simultaneously develop both practical and theoretical knowledge. They also bring precious information for people who are engaged in other kind of martial art or motion and health methods.

The book does not strive to teach you combinations of health and martial art exercises, although all listed exercises can meet this condition. The book information should help you to make your own notion of Taiji, to increase your apprehension of mind and mobility, and to increase your scope in searching for schools and teachers. Different conceptions mentioned in this book are parts of the same thing seen from the different angles of view. They make a unit that is sliced into smaller pieces to be understood fully. To put these pieces together and look in the Taiji world is an individual process that you will experience yourselves while reading this book.

Because of many different Taiji theories and versions, it is clear that some Taiji martial artists and theoreticians will not always agree with this book. The following lines may rouse most reflections and opposed reactions among the Young style favorers. Whether or not you are involved in martial arts, try to look at this book impartially. Take it as a challenge that is offered to you and gives you a chance to reconsider and reassess the knowledge you have and you are looking for.
